Gardiners Road- a country preschool 

Our lovely 1880's villa  is located on Gardiners Road (close to the corner of Johns Road)  in a large country garden with plenty of room for children to run and play.

The Preschool has three seperate areas - a spacious nursery for under two year olds, a Preschool room for two to three and a half year olds and a Prepschool for the older children.  All areas have access to covered verandahs and seperate spacious playgrounds.

Our Philosophy

Poppies Preschool is located in a character home with a spacious country setting.  We believe in sustainable practices to support our environment so that children can understand and respect the world we live in.  We believe the environment and atmosphere created is homely, safe, caring, happy and stimulating. We aim to provide quality Early Childhood Education in this environment that meets the needs of all children and their families/whanau.

Our programme offers a balance of structured and free choice learning experiences that are appropriate to the needs of each child.  We recognise routines as opportunities to extend and support children's learning through a combination  of teacher directed activities and children's interests.  Our programme is delivered with guidance, support, understanding, consistency and care.

Our Programme

Our programme is based on the curriculum for early childhood centres - Te Whaariki. We provide the children with opportunities to explore the 16 areas of play. We carefully plan our indoor and outdoor envionments to meet the children's individual learning goals providing them with stimulating and fun activities. The Nursery, Preschool and Prepschool each have a monthly focus coming from the children's interests. Our monthly focuses include dress up days, excursions out into the community and carefully planned activities to extend childrens learning. Each week we focus on a different letter, colour, number and shape.

Profile Books

Each child has their own profile book which is a record of their learning journey. The profile books contain learning stories (narrative documentations of your child's learning), photos, milestone achievements and learning goals for each child. Learning goals are set by the parents twice each year. Teachers then use teaching strategies to support your child's learning and development to meet goals. Progress and outcomes are documented through learning stories.
